Scientists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California recently solved a longstanding mystery surrounding the Macropinna microstoma, or barrelfish, a deep-sea creature with two glowing green eyes and a see-through skull. The mystery, apparently, was how exactly the fish’s eyes worked. That’s great, and we congratulate those fine scientists on their big breakthrough. But really, we just wanted to watch footage of a fish with a see-through skull. Clearly so did a lot of other people—this particular video, which shows the barrelfish floating in dark murky water while a narrator drones in the background, had gotten over 900,000 hits as of this writing. As one of the comment writers under the video succinctly put it: “that fish is the definition of awesome.”
