It’s a busy time of the year with shopping, wrapping and celebrating the joys of the holidays. For others–including the unsung heroes at Women Helping Women–they are keeping busy housing and feeding those in need. The shelter home is currently full, with 20 women and their 12 children thankful for a roof over their heads.
The full house inspired WHW to create a new event called The 12 Dinners of Christmas; the organization is inviting groups, families and individuals to commit to providing dinner for the shelter’s approximate 35 people. Executive director Stacey Moniz said the meals do not have to be fancy, turkey dinners. “It doesn’t have to be holiday food,” Moniz said. “In fact, my family’s going to do the 13th day and part of dinner includes the kale and cranberry salad from Costco. Keep it simple.”
To volunteer to prepare or purchase dinner, choose any night between now and Christmas Eve and contact Monique at deputy@whwmaui.net or call WHW at 808-242-6600.
WHW also is getting in the spirit with its first annual Holiday Craft Fair and Bazaar Saturday, Dec. 14 in the parking lot of their offices in Wailuku at 1935 Main Street. The event will feature 15 vendors including Obachan’s, Maui All Star Cheerleaders, Mary Kay, and 31 Bags; they expect to have jewelry, handmade crafts and food vendors on hand. The craft fair and bazaar will be open from 9am-2pm.
And on Saturday, Dec. 21, WHW is hosting its fifth annual Fun Run. The 5k/10k “Purple Christmas Run” will begin at the ReVive Boutique in the Old Kahului Shopping Center, 65 W. Kaahumanu Ave. Participants – who are encouraged to wear as much purple as possible–will start the race at Hoaloha Park at 8am.
There will be recognition awards presented to first place women and men’s divisions as well as awards for most pledges raised; any fitness level can win a medal at this Fun Run.
Entry fees for the 5k are $25 in advance and $30 on the day of the event; 10k fees are $40 advance or $45 on the day of event. Entry fees include a t-shirt, refreshments and door prizes. Pre-registration forms and route details are available at the WHW website womenhelpingwomenmaui.org.
