Concerned citizens planning a vigil to reflect on our oil dependency, and this tragedy in the Gulf.
Vanessa GhantousAloha ! We will be holding a vigil this evening at Moana Bakery and Cafe on Baldwin Avenue in Paia, to show support for the residents along the gulf coast who have been affected by the oil spill. I was so horrified, watching videos of children playing with big cllumps of oil on the beach in Florida, that I just wanted to remind everyone here that it could happen to any of us if we continue to allow off-shore drilling without the proper precautions and technology to prevent spills like this. I feel very helpless, and I am hoping that tonight, simply by gathering together, we can begin a dialogue about reducing our dependence on the oil that is causing this mess. There will be several electric vehicles on display, along with a power station for these vehicles, something that will be required by law to be added to Maui’s infrastructure in the next few years. We will begin at 6pm at the Moana Cafe, there will be several speakers and we will light candles. The event should be over around 7pm. Please join us.
