As you’ve no doubt heard by now, an 8.8 magnitude quake struck Chile this morning, triggering a tsunami warning for the entire Pacific rim. Waves are currently expected to hit the Big Island at 11:05am and Maui a half hour later at 11:35am.

Gov. Lingle has signed an emergency declaration. Officials caution that there may be more than one wave, and that the first may not be the biggest. May seem like common sense, but thrill-seekers be advised: Don’t try to surf a tsunami; it’s a wall of water carrying debris, not a wave.
