Travaasa Hana resort has launched a $12 million room restoration project to offer guests an enhanced vacation experience. The resort’s Ocean Bungalows (formerly known as Sea Ranch Cottages) will feature new décor that reflects a sophisticated tropical palette. The resort’s low-rise Garden Jr. Suites will follow the same design interpretation as the bungalows.
“It’s an honor to lead this storied resort into a new chapter,” said new general manager David MacIlwraith. “As part of the Hana experience, preserving the property’s authentic sense of place is—and will always be—our focus.”
Interiors of the suites and bungalows will feature custom-made furnishing crafted with sustainable materials and kapa (Hawaiian bark cloth). New artwork will consist primarily of photography that captures the ocean activities and natural beauty of Hana. The newly imagined bathroom areas will have a “clean redesign” featuring eco-friendly bath accessories.
Updates to outdoor spaces will include restored lanais with new chaise lounges and panoramic sliding glass doors to maximize Hana’s cooling trade winds.
Maui-based interior designer Hunton Conrad is leading the redesign project. Conrad—who has worked with Travaasa in the past—is known for landscape artistry and sense of place. He is said to be well acquainted with the resort’s original intentions.
“From the moment Hotel Hana-Maui transformed to Travaasa Hana in 2011, Travaasa Experiential Resorts has been dedicated to preserving the authenticity and charm of historic Hana,” said Adam Hawthorne, president of Travaasa Experiential Resorts. “This restoration project reinforces that commitment. We look forward to bringing guests an even better resort experience.”
The resort’s Ocean Bungalows are set on an expansive, grassy lawn overlooking the Hana coastline, with each structure featuring high wood-beamed ceilings, interior ceiling fans and a private lanai. The structures were originally designed to reflect plantation bungalows once common in Hana, and throughout the Hawaiian Islands, in the early years of the past century.
The resort will be open throughout the restoration project and all facilities—including the Ocean Bungalows’ infinity pool and hot tub, The Spa at Travaasa Hana, resort programming, the resort restaurant and in-room dining—will remain operational. Post-restoration, all guest rooms will continue to remain free of radios, clocks and televisions.
The $12 million restoration project is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
