In case you were wondering why images of water cascading 80-plus feet into the Wailuku sky were filling your social media timelines this morning, it’s sadly not because the county just installed a Vegas-like water fountain on Market Street. Apparently, this morning a car drove over a fire hydrant in front of the Market Street Chevron. Here’s the official County of Maui press release on the incident, released just moments ago:
Wailuku, Maui – A motor vehicle crash damaged a fire hydrant and affected water service for Wailuku town this morning. Department of Water Supply crews are on scene and expect to have the problem repaired by 1 p.m.
At this time businesses along Main Street between Church Street and Market Street are without water service. Other areas in Wailuku will have low water pressure until the repairs are completed. A memo issued for all county workers stated that the low water pressure had affected at the Old Courthouse, Kalana O Maui and Kalana Pakua buildings and that toilets were unlikely to flush while repairs are underway.
Uptown Chevron workers across the street from the fire hydrant said they saw a white sedan hit the hydrant this morning.
It’s not quite 10am as I write this, and the new Wailuku water fountain has already been turned off. Still, it was fun while it lasted.
