When you think of Starwood Hotels & Resorts in Hawaii, the first things that probably come to mind are swaying palm trees, luscious pools and relaxing vacation time. But one of Starwood’s divisions–Na Wahine Kuilima o ka Leo Kamaehu–is different.
The mission of the division, whose name translates to “Women Moving Forward Together with One Voice of Strength,” is advancing the female gender. Part of their mission is to increase the number of women with high-potential to work in senior management and leadership positions.
To achieve those goals, the organization trains and mentors women and also is very active in what they call global citizenry. In working toward those goals, Na Wahine Kuilima is hosting a fall clothing drive Nov. 1-15 to support Ka Hale a Ke Ola Homeless Resource Center in Lahaina–KHAKO.
The philanthropic effort–part of a series of community outreach initiatives planned state-wide to empower woman–is seeking donations of clothing for women, men and children on behalf of the associates at the three Starwood properties on Maui. The clothes will be used to help women in need gain better career opportunities and make a positive impact in their communities as part of the KHAKO program.
“First impressions go a long way,” says Alexis Eaton, Public Relations Manager at Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa and a Na Wahine Kuilima member. “This clothing drive allows us to help the women, men, and children taking part in the KHAKO program get a fresh start and new beginning. It’s great to bring the entire Starwood Hawaii community together to support this cause.”
In addition to vocational rehabilitation, KHAKO links with more than 50 human service agencies to help clients meet medical, mental health and financial needs. Clients enter the program through Intake Service, are assessed and are housed if administration criteria are met, and as beds are available. Within six weeks, a client may become qualified for long-term Transitional Program.
