This time of the year, there is a lot of excess. In addition to extra food and beverages in which many partake, there are extra empty boxes, left-over gift-wrap paper and bows. Plus, there are Christmas Trees–and getting rid of them is not always easy.
This year, Boy Scout Troop 22 will be recycling holiday trees to help make life a bit more convenient–and green. For the third year, the Kihei/Wailea troop is offering two ways to recycle your tree–and avoid adding to Maui’s landfill.
Kihei and Wailea residents can take advantage of Troop 22 Boy Scouts’ curbside Christmas tree collection service. For a suggested donation of $10 each, you can leave your fresh cut tree on the curb in front of your home on Jan. 4. Trees must be free of decorations, including tinsel, lights, ornaments, wire and flocking. To make a reservation call 808-281-4589 and leave your name, phone number and address. Or email information to troop22maui@gmail.com.
The troop is also offering a second option: for a $5 suggested donation, trees can be dropped off at the troop’s recycling site located on Pi’ikea Avenue, across from, Long’s in Kihei, behind Azeka Mauka on the way to Safeway, off South Kihei Road. The recycling center will be open Jan. 4 from 8am-12pm.
More than one hundred thousand evergreen trees are reportedly imported to Hawaii every year for Christmas. Taking advantage of the Boy Scouts’ recycling program helps the environment; plus all proceeds benefit the Kihei/Wailea Boy Scout Troop 22.
