With so many tragic stories about how substance abuse ruins lives, it’s nice to report that 50 people recently graduated from Maui’s Aloha House’s Residential Treatment Program.
The nonprofit recovery facility hosted a graduation ceremony on Oct. 17 with live music performed by Maui local Mitch Kepa, who’s a counselor at the rehab center. Several people currently in treatment joined Kepa in performing traditional Hawaiian music.
“Being a part of this celebration reconnects clients with Hawaiian culture and shows them how to honor themselves for their accomplishments,” Kepa said in an Oct. 21 news release sent out by Aloha House. “Recovery is experiential and the simple act of being a part of something bigger than oneself makes our clients feel good about themselves, which is important for the recovery process.”
During the graduation ceremony, clients also shared thoughts about the program, which helps rehabilitate individuals affected by mental health issues as well as substance abuse and addiction. “Recovery isn’t easy but Aloha House taught me how to take on the challenges I will face after leaving treatment,” said one graduate, according to the news release. “I know I will stay strong and work with my sponsor every week. It is a good life and this is a proud moment”
Others lent support to those still working the program at the treatment facility. “Every morning when I wake up I make sure I look myself in the mirror and say ‘just win today’,” said one graduate. “You have to just think about today.”
Aloha House hosts a graduation ceremony four times a year for those who have completed residential treatment.
