Hawaii’s Safeway stores launched another food drive program this holiday season in an effort to make it easier for shoppers to donate to local food banks. The “Help Us End Hunger (Every Bag Counts)” program will amass essential food items for each island’s food bank–Maui Food Bank, Hawaii Foodbank on Oahu and Kauai and The Food Basket on the Big Island.
The “Help Us End Hunger” effort allows shoppers an opportunity to donate specially packed grocery bags with items the food banks need most, including canned tuna, peanut butter, pasta, and canned vegetables. The bags are available for $10 each at all Safeway Hawaii stores through Dec. 25.
“Safeway customers care about our community, which is why Safeway Hawaii participates in these programs to contribute and make much-needed donations to local food banks,” said George Glukfeld, Safeway Hawaii district manager. “We’re glad that we are able to continue this food drive at a time when, unfortunately, hunger continues to be a problem for many in our communities.”
In addition to the grocery bag program, the Hawaii Foodbank’s “Check Out Hunger” effort continues, giving customers another opportunity to help fight hunger in Hawaii. Shoppers can find bright green coupons at each Safeway Hawaii checkout stand; by simply tearing off a coupon, you can feed a family with donations starting at $2.81. The proceeds from this program also go to the food banks located on each island.
Last year, Safeway Hawaii donated over $109,000 to the Hawaii Food Bank as a result of Safeway’s “Help Us End Hunger” holiday food drive, and more than 7,200 bags of groceries were sold at check out stands. Every donation received helped feed one in seven people in Hawaii–more than 14 percent of the state’s population–who must turn to a food bank for assistance.
