The staff and students of Hui Malama Learning Center recently received nearly $7,500 from Hawaii Petroleum. The donation was part of Ohana Fuels‘ “Fuel Up. Do Good” community giving program; to raise the money, Ohana Fuels earmarked a portion of sales of their Top Tier fuel-efficient gasoline from January through March 2015. The money was designated for donation to the Learning Center’s enrichment programs.
Ohana Fuels also provided Hui Malama with a Minit Stop location and equipment to conduct car-wash fundraisers, which helped raise additional money for the Learning Center’s programs. The funds donated by Ohana Fuels will allow the school to expand academic and mentoring programs as well as community service projects.
“The mission of our Giving Program is to help meet the needs of the communities we serve by supporting non-profit organizations that improve the overall quality of life,” said Kimo Haynes, President of Hawaii Petroleum Inc. “Ohana Fuels proudly sponsors programs that enhance the vitality of our neighborhoods, celebrate our community’s success, and support local charities.”
Hui Malama partnering with successful local businesses like Hawaii Petroleum is a critical component of the school’s new workforce preparedness project made possible through the County of Maui and GIA funding, Haynes said.
Hui Malama Learning Center’s mission is to inspire, nurture and empower students to pursue careers that bolster our islands’ economy, increase self-reliance and provide for future generations, according to its Mission Statement. The Center emphasizes project-based learning and youth engagement strategies that develop the whole person; Hui Malama cultivates students’ unique talents, intelligences and character. Through a social entrepreneurial approach and leveraging resources through partnerships, Hui Malama demonstrates a Non-Profit Social Impact Model that is organizational sound, fiscally responsible and sustainable.
