As part of its “Fuel Up. Do Good” program of donating money to local nonprofits, Ohana Fuels announced on Oct. 7 that it would be giving a portion of the money it receives from gasoline purchases through Dec. 31 of this year to Hale Makua Health Services, which dates to 1946 and provides a home for Maui seniors who lack the means to pay for their own care.
It’s a generous program, no doubt about it, though it is interesting that Ohana Fuels–which runs three stations on Maui and four on Hawaii Island–won’t say exactly what “portion” of their proceeds they’ll be donating to Hale Makua.
“Ohana Fuels does not disclose the percentage of revenue that is donated to the charities, but the donation amounts have been a little over $3,000 in previous quarters,” said Denise Thayer, Hale Makua’s Director of Development and Marketing, in an Oct. 8 email.
Indeed, its website states that on Aug. 28 Ohana Fuels gave one of those cartoonishly large checks that are made for corporate-charity photo-ops to Maui Youth and Family Services for $3,375 as part of its “Fuel Up. Do Good” program for that quarter. On Apr. 29, Ohana gave a similar check for $3,315 to Ka Lima O Maui.
Ohana Fuels stations are located in Kahului (85 Wakea Ave.), Makawao (1100 Makawao Ave.) and Pukalani (3310A Haleakala Ave.).
