Makawao is a charming little town with storefronts that look like they were built for an old-time Western. The Upcountry Maui village is a Paniolo town–a former and current home to the cowboy lifestyle.
For tourists, it’s an off-the-beaten-path destination en route to Haleakala. For many locals, it’s just home–a place to run into friends while having coffee after dropping your kids off at school.
The flavor of Makawao is being honored with the Nov. 15 grand opening of the Makawao History Project, a display of photos and collectables to be housed at a former art gallery on Makawao Avenue. The opening celebration will launch at 5pm during the Makawao Third Friday festivities.
Rose Freitas and Peter Baldwin will be on hand to light the Makawao holiday star atop a street-corner Christmas tree. The Five Corners band with Rosalind Modica, Sanders & Kalaway and the Kalama Intermediate School Ukulele Band will provide music.
The Makawao History Project is also asking the community to dig deep into their personal archives for historical memorabilia to temporarily display at the new museum. All photos, maps, paintings and prints should be submitted for loan no later than Nov. 14.
The museum–scheduled to be open from Nov. 15 to Dec. 31–is also looking for volunteers to help staff the History Project. If you have a donation to loan or are interested in volunteering, please call Cheryl Ambrozic at 808-283-3732.
