Are you proud of your green thumb and need a place to show it off? Why not consider becoming a Master Gardener.
The University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension Service is taking applications for the 2014 Maui Master Gardener training program, which is held at the University of Hawaii-Maui College campus in Kahului.
The 16-week class covers a vast array of topics ranging from plant propagation to integrated pest management. Additional subjects covered include Hawaiian native plants, food safety, lawns, soils, vegetables, tropical fruits, orchids and organic gardening, among others.
As part of the training, graduates must volunteer a minimum of 50 hours to become certified Master Gardeners. Volunteers will conduct workshops; host plant clinics and plant sales; develop and maintain educational gardens; and staff booths at the Maui County Fair. Master Gardener volunteers also will provide research-based information to the gardening community; write advice columns at local newspapers and operate the help-desk at the Maui County Extension office.
The classes—open to those 18 years and up—meet on Wednesday mornings beginning Jan. 15, 2014. The enrollment fee is $125, which covers training materials.
