Maui filmmaker Kenneth K. Martinez Burgmaier was recently honored with a 2014 Pele Award for his film Aunty Nona Beamer–Malama Ko Aloha (“Keep Your Love”), a documentary about the legendary Hawaiian matriarch of the Beamer family. The film won the American Advertising Federation Bronze Pele award in the Cinema Advertising Movie Trailers category. It was the first time a Maui film won in the category.
Mohala Hou Foundation commissioned Emmy Award, Billboard Music, Na Hoku Hanohano Winner Burgmaier of Jazz Alley TV and Hawaii On TV.com Networks to produce and direct the documentary film about Beamer’s life and her fight toward preserving, perpetuating and creating awareness of Hawaiian Culture.
Winona Kapuailohiamanonokalani Beamer–the mother of Hawaii’s premier singer/songwriter, arranger, composer and Master Of The Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Keola Beamer—was a noted chanter, composer, Kumu Hula (Hula Master) and author, who spent a lifetime researching and teaching “Hawaiiana,” a term she coined.
The documentary explores Aunty Nona in her own words and the journey of her life. The movie serves to educate people around the world about traditional Hawaiian culture and how it can bring people of all backgrounds together. Some of Hawaii’s most respected artists share their own stories in the film about why Aunty Nona is considered one of Hawaii’s Treasures of Aloha.
The film also won an audience award at the Lanai Film Festival and was selected for the Opening Night film at the Big Island Film Festival for its World Premiere. The American Advertising Federation Awards ceremony was held April 26 at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki.
Aunty Nona Beamer–Malama Ko Aloha will have its official Maui screening at the 22nd annual celebration of the arts on Mother’s Day at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua.
