Maui County Councilman Mike Victorino, who chairs the Water Resources Committee, would like you to attend his hearing tomorrow morning on multi-family water service rates. Specifically, to discuss the new rate increase on multi-family dwellings. That increase, 15 cents per 1,000 gallons to $4.95–assuming the dwelling consumes more than 15,000 gallons per month.
“The rate for 15,000 gallons is easily attained within a couple of days for most of Maui County’s multi-unit properties with only one meter,” said Victorino in the Oct. 1 press release. “Families that use less water than neighbor units–even if they were away or on vacation–will still have to pay the top tier rate, according to our current structure.”
Now going off the title and various contextual clues subtly sprinkled throughout the news release, I’m guessing that Victornio would like it if members of the public attending the Wednesday morning hearing. Here’s the title if you’re not convinced: “Committee seeks public input on multi-family water service rates.”
Now I might be missing something, but it seems like Victorino is calling on residents to attend the Wednesday morning (9am) hearing and testify about multi-family water rates. This seems to be confirmed by this statement near the end of the news release:
“Councilmember Victorino said he encourages the public to testify at Wednesday’s meeting to help the committee find an equitable solution for water service consumers in multi-family dwellings.”
Did I mention that the hearing is scheduled for 9am on a Wednesday?
Now here’s a radical idea–if Victorino (or anyone else on the County Council) really, truly would like the public to attend a hearing, how about scheduling it at a time when most residents aren’t already busy at work?
The Water Resources Committee meets Wednesday at 9am in the 8th floor Council Chamber, 200 S. High St., Wailuku.
