The Summer Musical Theatre Camps hosted by Maui Academy of Performing Arts will be auditioning young performers on Sunday, April 6. Performers entering third grade and higher for the 2014-15 school year are eligible to audition for the Summer 2014 Musical Theatre Camps.
Auditions will take place at MAPA’s studios in Wailuku. Students entering grades 3-8 will audition for the Youth Musical Theatre Camp. Students entering grades 9 and up will audition for the Teen Musical Theatre Camp. Youth auditions will be held from 12:30-2:30 pm; teen auditions from 3-5pm. No previous experience is necessary to audition. MAPA suggests wearing comfortable clothes and asks those auditioning to be prepared to stay the full two hours.
Students auditioning for the Teen Musical Theatre Camp are encouraged, but not required, to prepare 16 bars of a pop or musical theater song. Students who prepare a song should bring sheet music for the accompanist or bring accompaniment on an iPod or phone.
The camps this year will work on two full-scale productions–Disney’s Cinderella Kids (youth) and Pippin (teens). The musicals will be performed at MAPA’s Steppingstone Playhouse in Queen Ka’ahumanu Center. Parents should note that Pippin contains mature language and content. Parents who are concerned about the appropriateness of this show may request additional information about specific content by emailing friendsofmapa@mauiacademy.org.
MAPA’s Summer Musical Theatre Camps are rooted in the philosophy that sustained, regular participation in the arts is essential to the development of young people. Students develop skills in acting, singing and dancing through a rigorous and fun curriculum taught by professional teaching artists. The performances give students the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have gained through the classes and rehearsals including acting, dance, voice, professionalism, collaboration and self-control through focus and concentration.
The Youth Musical Theatre Camp runs Mondays–Fridays (9am-2:30pm) from June 23 to July 23. Youth performances will be held July 24-27. Tuition for the camp is $875; scholarships and payment plans are available.
The Teen Musical Theatre Camp runs Mondays–Saturdays (9am-4pm) from June 9 through July 4. The teen camp will have additional choreography workshops on April 13, 27, May 18, 25, June 1; workshops run from 4-5:30pm. The teen production of Pippin will run July 5-13. Tuition is $275; the reduced tuition rate is attributed to several generous individual donations to the 2014 Teen Musical Theatre Camp. Additional scholarships and payment plans are not available for the Teen Summer Musical Theatre Camp.
