Makawao Union Church is offering Maui residents an opportunity to let their artistic flair flow. The church is holding its second annual Chair-ish Maui Recycled Art Contest—and it’s all for keeping old chairs out of the landfill and raise money for the church.
The church will provide entrants an old metal folding chair to decorate in any manner you wish. The chair can be painted, beaded, stenciled, upholstered or adorned with anything your imagination can think of; there’s no limit on creativity. The only rule is that once decorated, the chair must still be able to fold and unfold.
There is a $15 entry fee and the chairs will be provided by the church. Chairs can be picked up at the church on any Sunday before March 31 from 11:30am to 12:30pm. Decorated chairs must returned for the contest by April 6. The top 10 winners will receive prizes of merchandise and services donated by local companies.
Also, entrants can name a price for their chair and possibly sell it during the event–with a percentage of the sale price donated to the church.
The chairs will remain on display until April 20 at Makawao Union Church.
Last year’s winner was Lisa Burke whose “Funny Kine Chair” featured a hula skirt, coconut bra, lei and island-inspired upholstery.
