According to a Honolulu Star-Advertiser story posted moments ago, Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle and owner of 98 percent of the island of Lanai, has resigned as Oracle’s CEO. The Star-Advertiser also played up Ellison’s influence on today’s tech world:
“Ellison, who turned 70 last month, guided the Redwood City, Calif.-based company for more than 35 years to make it the world’s largest database-software company and one of the biggest providers of business programs. Oracle’s products have become the backbone of modern commerce and industry. The company has a market capitalization of more than $185 billion and produces annual revenue of $38 billion.”
As for what Ellison will do now, the story doesn’t really say, though it did report that he’d take on the titles of Chairman and “Chief Technology Officer,” whatever that is. Of course, we’re talking about a guy who owns a yacht more powerful than many nation’s navies. He could always just move to Hawaii and become Overlord of Lanai (he also owns Island Air, but they don’t really need an overlord at the moment), which I’d imagine has to be one of the best jobs around.
