Do you have a short story inside your head just waiting to get out? Have you aspired to be a writer but never felt bold enough to put pen to paper? Well, if you’re an unpublished writer, an opportunity awaits. LahainaTown Action Committee is hosting its first annual Maui Short Story Competition beginning this month.
The LAC is looking for a winning short story of less than 1,500 words. The competition is officially an open genre however the committee encourages writers to focus their story on the island of Maui–and look at it from a unique perspective. The LAC said in a press release that good ideas would include Maui life, heritage, culture, the land and the ocean surrounding our island.
Entries will open Jan. 20 and close Mar. 20. The committee is charging a $25 entry fee per submission. There is a three-entry limit per person. Entries can be submitted online or via postal mail; please include an entry form with postal submissions. Forms can be found at visitlahaina.com.
There will be a cash prize for the first place winner. Other winners will receive prizes donated by sponsors. All winners will be announced Apr. 11.
