Hawaii Foodbank’s “Check-Out Hunger” program will take place this year from Nov. 4, 2013 through Jan. 15, 2014. The program, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, provides Maui shoppers with the opportunity to make a donation to the Maui Food Bank when they are paying for their groceries at local markets.
Shoppers at the check stand can tear off a bright green “Check-Out Hunger” coupon and feed a child breakfast for a week for $2.81, feed a senior lunch for a month for $12.43, or feed a family dinner for a week for $16.84. The amount selected will be added to the grocery bill.
“We continue to need the community’s support in the fight against hunger,” said Gerald Shintaku, CBL of Kraft Foods in Hawaii, which is donating $5,000 to the program. “Even the smallest donation can make a world of difference to the people in our community whose only wish is to not be hungry this holiday season.”
Last year, the program raised $236,045 for Hawaii’s hungry, a nearly 11 percent increase over the previous year. Since its launch in 1994, the program has raised nearly $2 million. Participating grocers on Maui include Safeway Stores and Times Supermarkets. All donations generated on the Valley Isle will go directly to the Maui Food Bank.
The Hawaii Foodbank is the only nonprofit agency on Oahu that collects, warehouses and distributes mass quantities of both perishable and nonperishable food to help feed Hawaii’s hungry. Donated and purchased foods are distributed to over 230 member agencies on Oahu and Kauai. Last year, the Hawaii Foodbank distributed over 13.4 million pounds of food, including more than 4.2 million pounds of fresh produce.
