The HC&S/EMI Safety Selfie Photo Contest recently raised $13,000 in cash awards for Maui youth centers. Hana Youth Center took the top honors with a $4,500 donation for three photos submitted to the second annual photo contest. The winners, which were announced at an Oct. 22 ceremony at the A&B Sugar Museum, included Kihei Youth Center ($2,750); Boys & Girls Club of Maui, Haiku ($2,000); Paia Youth & Cultural Center ($1,750); Boys & Girls Club of Maui, Lahaina ($1,000); Boys & Girls Club of Maui, Makawao ($500); and Boys & Girls Club of Maui, Central ($500). Each participating youth center was also given $250 for entering the contest, along with branded trucker hats as props for their photos.
The Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company’s “Play Hard Play Safe” Selfie Photo Contest was designed to challenge Maui’s youth centers and their members to find unique ways to use selfies to encourage Maui’s keiki to stay out of the ditches and off the cane roads, and instead seek other fun island activities.
All of the sixty submitted photos were posted online at the HC&S website (Hcsugar.com) and the public was invited to choose their favorite photo. In addition, a panel of local judges was convened to select winning photos in numerous special categories, such as the best photo incorporating Maui culture, using a safety theme and displaying a creative use of an app. Judges included Kanoa Leahey, Brendan Smith, Saedene Ota, Nicole Shipman and Mayor Alan Arakawa.
In addition to the $13,000 in cash grants directed to support the good work of Maui’s Youth Centers, HC&S and EMI management presented each of the youth center members with a 2015 calendar displaying all of the creative photos entered in the contest. Each center was given additional copies of the calendars to sell as fundraising tool.
