Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company recently launched a $100,000 fund to support Maui-based projects and programs. The HC&S Community Initiative will consider overall community benefit, natural resource stewardship and education in deciding how to donate the funds.
Federally recognized charities with 501(c)(3) status, as well as other registered non-profit organizations and community-based projects or groups, will be eligible for grant consideration. All projects or activities funded must help Maui in some way. Organizations should have a minimum of three years of experience in their field.
“This $100,000 fund is intended to support community initiatives that reflect our core values, which include preserving Maui’s unique culture, supporting thoughtful growth and sustainability on the island, and ensuring educational and training programs are available to nurture our future generations,” said Rick Volner, the HC&S general manager, in a May 1 company press release.
An advisory committee of Maui residents with diverse backgrounds will manage the initiative. Grant applications and information about the HC&S Community Initiative are now available at the company’s website. All grant applications must be submitted by May 31. The committee will convene in June to review applications.
“It is important that Maui residents are deciding how the Community Initiative funds will be used,” Volner said in his company’s news release. “We believe that they have the best perspective on what is important to Maui and what will make a difference.”
