Are you ready to take action on that great idea for a new business, product or service? Well, now’s your chance. The second annual Startup Weekend Maui is set for May 15-17 and the MEDB is offering a boot-camp to help you make the most of the entrepreneurial event.
Startup Weekend is a 54-hour event that brings together Maui designers, developers, entrepreneurs, and experts to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback. During the crash course, participants pitch ideas, vote on their favorites and form teams in order to build and launch the business, product, etc. The three-day frenzy of business model creation culminates with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.
The Startup Weekend Maui winning team will receive more than $3,000 in business services. “However, it’s more than the prizes or the number of startups that are launched,” said Gerry Smith of Maui Economic Development Board. “The real value in a Startup Weekend is learning through the act of creation, developing deeper relationships than a typical networking event, matching potential co-founders, validating ideas and experimenting in a risk-free environment, and for many, it’s about taking the first step into entrepreneurship.”
MEDB is helping prepare participants by offering a free Bootcamp and Pitch Workshop on Wednesday, April 29. MEDB says the boot-camp/workshop is an ideal opportunity for confirmed participants and those who might be interested in participating in Startup Weekend Maui to prepare for and/or learn more about the empowering event for entrepreneurs.
Participation in this pre-event will help provide a framework and additional tools for the main event. Previous Startup Weekend winners, along with coaches and judges, will share information with boot-camp attendees about what to expect at this year’s Startup Weekend. Those attending the workshop will receive helpful tips on crafting a strong 60-second pitch for their startup idea; they also will have an opportunity to hone their presentation skills through practice sessions.
