The Fairmont Kea Lani recently sponsored a community reef clean-up in honor of Earth Day. The clean-up—done through Trilogy Excursion’s Blue’aina Program—included a $1,000 donation to Hawaiian Island Land Trust.
More than 50 Maui residents and visitors joined Trilogy crew volunteers, representatives from Hawaiian Island Land Trust and members of The Fairmont Kea Lani’s Sustainability Team on April 27 to SCUBA, snorkel and free dive for rubbish. The group collected harmful marine debris including fishing line and plastic from the ocean floor off the coast of West Maui.
During the excursion, the Kea Lani’s Sustainability Team presented a cash donation of $1,000 to Hawaiian Island Land Trust in support of the ongoing efforts to preserve and protect cultural and ecologically significant lands in Hawaii.
The recent reef clean-up was part of Trilogy Excursion’s Blue’aina program, which sponsors the resources to clean a different Maui reef each month. Launched in 2010 by company employees passionate about protecting the ocean environment, Blue’aina, has incorporated elements of citizen science, education, and philanthropy amongst community members, local businesses and organizations. The program also donates each month to the Hawaiian National Marine Sanctuary Foundation to help fund their efforts of protecting humpback whales.
“We’re very proud to work with Trilogy Excursions and Hawaiian Island Land Trust to clean one of Maui’s coral reefs,” said Charles Head, General Manager of The Fairmont Kea Lani. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see the positive impact we can have on our ocean environment when like-minded businesses join forces with Maui’s community.”
The reef clean-up is just one of the resort’s long-standing commitments to environmental stewardship and responsible tourism, which includes more than 50 sustainability initiatives. The resort has a close partnership with Hawaiian Islands Land Trust through Fairmont’s “Meetings That Matter” program which provides corporate groups the opportunity to donate a portion of their room revenue to a local non-profit and enhance meetings with local volunteer opportunities. Corporate groups staying at The Fairmont Kea Lani can visit protected land and restore habitats for native species, maintain a Hawaiian lo‘i (taro garden) and participate in beach clean-ups.
Additionally, in 2014, The Fairmont Kea Lani launched a new partnership with Clean The World, a nonprofit organization that recycles partially used bath amenities for donation to impoverished countries suffering from disease and infection. Since Jan. 1, they’ve saved 149 pounds of waste from the Maui landfill. In addition, the hotel has invested in a state-of-the-art laundry water recycling system, eco-mode thermostats for each guestroom, compostable disposable containers and low-flow shower heads and toilets.
