The 89th Maui Fair opens next week with the traditional parade, which is also Maui’s largest, on Thursday, Sept. 29, and will continue with rides, food, first-rate entertainment and more through the evening of Sunday, Oct.
The theme this year is “A Timeless Tradition.” The fair attracts both locals and visitors alike, who can enjoy an alcohol-free, smoke-free and drug-free family-oriented educational event that features multicultural food, first-rate entertainment, the E.K. Fernandez Fun Zone, plus horticulture, Bonsai, livestock, homemaking, photo and art exhibits and competitions. This year, the 4th Annual Robo Tech Maui Expo & Competition will again showcase the future of robotics and student achievements in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.
The Maui Fair is also the primary source of funding for many of Maui’s nonprofit and community organizations. It relies entirely on corporate or local business sponsorships, local donations and volunteers for support.
In the past, the Maui Fair has offered promotions for ice cream and soda, and while those are the things our children dream of, they’re not exactly healthy. This year, the fair is taking a different approach by asking families to “Take the LEAP,” with LEAP standing for “Live Healthy, Eat Well, Be Active, Live Pono.”
One fortunate family will win a trip to Vegas with their entry, which is due Sept. 26. All you have to do is describe what it means to you and your family to “Take the LEAP.” How do you live healthy, eat well, be active and live pono? Describe it in a paragraph of 100 words or less, original drawing, painting, or photograph with caption.
For all entries, please limit your canvas of expression to 8.5 by 11 inches. Submissions will not be returned. You can mail entries to KPOA, Take the Leap, 311 Ano Street, Kahului, HI 96732. The due date is Sept. 26. All entries will receive a special Take the Leap gift and will be showcased at the Maui Fair. For more information go online to www.MauiFair.com.
