D.T. Fleming beach park was closed briefly on Tuesday, Nov. 19 after a man discovered what officials thought was possibly explosive ordinance. A man visiting the island was snorkeling about 20 yards offshore at approximately 12:30 p.m. when he discovered an eight-inch long canister partially buried in eight feet of water.
The unnamed tourist retrieved the canister and took it to the lifeguard stand. The Ocean Safety officers on hand then called police, who arrived shortly after.
Police officers evacuated the park by 1:10pm and contacted the Army Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team from Oahu. Army EOD personnel later determined the canister contained no explosives.
County officials reopened the beach shortly thereafter.
