We’ve seen it from afar, a tiny speck of old war history peacefully anchored off Sugar Beach, but now LCM 8540 has beached herself. She broke anchor and came ashore last night, an officer with the Department of Land and Natural Resources standing at the scene told me, but could provide few other details. Her owner, who lives on the Mainland, has been notified of the grounding, the officer added.
As you can see from the photo above, the craft–built to carry troops and supplies ashore during amphibious invasions during World War II–is actually quite large. And though beached, it’s not anchored, and is still moving about in the heavy surf that pushed it to land.
No word as yet as to you when the craft might be steered back to sea.
