While perusing a release from Alexander & Baldwin about incoming CEO Stanley Kuriyama, I came across an interesting paragraph down at the bottom in those light-colored italics that imply “don’t read me, I’m not important”:
“Statements in this press release that are not historical facts are “forward-looking statements,” within the meaning of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995, that involve a number of risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ materially from those contemplated by the relevant forward-looking statement. These forward-looking statements are not guarantees of future performance. This release should be read in conjunction with our Annual Report on Form 10-K and our other filings with the SEC through the date of this release, which identify important factors that could affect the forward-looking statements in this release.”
Translation: Everything we just said that didn’t already happen could well be a bunch of BS. If it is, and if you make any actual inferences or financial decisions based on this information, don’t come crying to us when it all goes to hell. If you really want to know anything about our company and its prospects, you’ll need a lot of information, none of which is contained in this release. Thank you. And sorry for wasting the last 10 minutes of your life.
