Alex Nakajima has been named the new general manager at Maui’s Kapalua Golf. Nakajima joins the Maui Golf Club directly from Princeville Makai Golf Club, located at the St. Regis Princeville Resort in Kauai; Nakajima served as general manager of the Kauai Golf Club since 2009.
In addition to his GM role at Makai, Nakajima simultaneously worked as the regional director of Hawaii operations for Troon golf course management, development and marketing company.
In 2015, Nakajima was named “General Manager of the Year for Troon Golf,” which recognized him for owner satisfaction, topline revenue growth and innovative ideas at Makai.
Prior to his time at Makai Golf Club, Nakajima was the director of golf asset management for Goldman Sachs Realty in Japan, managing $1.2 billion in golf investments. He is a 23-year veteran of the golf industry having worked in a variety of key roles, including head golf professional and golf operations manager, in both Japan and Hawaii.
Nakajima replaces Mike Jones, who spent the last eight-plus years as general manager of Kapalua Golf. Jones is pursuing new career opportunities in southwestern Pennsylvania.
“We’re excited to welcome Alex to Kapalua,” said Mike Ryan, division president, Troon Golf. “His work at Princeville Makai Golf Club was remarkable and earned him General Manager of the Year honors over more than 250 Troon property managers. He is an innovative thinker and places guests’ needs and satisfaction above all else. Mike Jones will be missed at Kapalua, but Alex is an excellent choice to fill his shoes.”
