Maui’s Bio-Beetle ECO rental car company won a slot as a top 10 finalist in the People & Planet Award for Green Businesses. The fall competition is run by Green America–a not-for-profit membership organization whose mission is to help create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society.
Bio-Beetle–the first and only rental car company in the world with cars fueled exclusively with biodiesel–launched on the island of Maui in January 2003. The company not only provides a green alternative to standard rental car companies, but it also strives to operate its business in an ecologically responsible manner.
“Besides offering biodiesel rental cars, Bio-Beetle has expanded to offer 100 percent electric, plug-in hybrid electric and hybrid cars,” said Bio-Beetle vice president Pamela Miedtke-Wolf. “We don’t use toxic chemicals to clean the cars, we use 100 percent recycled paper in the office, give free loaners of coolers, boogie boards and other items people may use for their Maui stay so they don’t need to buy something they would end up throwing away at the end of their trip.”
That business philosophy earned Bio-Beetle its place as a finalist in Green America’s People & Planet Awards. Each of the 10 finalists made it through a competitive initial voting round by a panel of expert judges; the judges for this season’s awards include representatives from Aveda, Clif Bar, Maggie’s Organics, Organic Valley and Green America.
The finalists are expected to represent an overall green way of doing business. They must also stand out in their commitment to greener travel and transportation.
Three of the top 10 finalists will be selected by votes cast at the Green America website. The top three companies will each win a $5,000 prize. Voting is now open and ends at 5pm EST on Dec. 2.
“We are delighted that Green America has chosen Bio-Beetle Eco Rental Cars as a finalist in the People & Planet Awards,” said Bio-Beetle president Shaun Stenshol. “Bio-Beetle is committed to environmental sustainability and showing that businesses can lead the way to a sustainable society.”
