Senator Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, has been chosen by the American Bar Association as one of five female attorneys to be honored with the 2013 Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award. Beginning in 1991, the award recognizes the accomplishments of women lawyers who excel in their fields, opening the way for other women to follow.
“The Margaret Brent Awards celebrate the extraordinary achievements of female lawyers who have significantly contributed to the advancement of women in the profession,” said Mary B. Cranston, chair of the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession, in an Aug. 8 news release. “Our honorees’ accomplishments serve as an inspiration to women throughout the nation.”
From her academics at UH Manoa and Georgetown to her political career in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate, Hirono has sought to become an advocate for unrepresented people. Creating a way past barriers of her own, Hirono is also Hawaii’s first female senator, the first Asian-Pacific American woman elected to the U.S. Senate and the first Buddhist in the Senate.
The awards will be presented on Aug. 11 at the Moscone Center West in San Francisco. Sara Holtz, Gladys Kessler, Marygold Shire Melli and Therese M. Stewart were named as the other honorees.
