Milagro’s Paia Address and Phone
One of the quickest ways to a staycation on Maui is to head to Milagro’s in Paia and find yourself some seating on their lanai and take in the Northshore sights. Milagro’s sits right at the crossroads of North Shore and Upcountry, the intersection Hana Highway where Baldwin Avenue begins its trek up Haleakala to Makawao. There is always an eclectic crowd and a tangible chemistry in the air here that lets you know its time to take the load off and have a margarita.
What attracts folks to this cozy lanai is not the people watching, that is just the fringe benefits, but the great menu at Milagro’s. Specializing in Latin and Southwestern cuisine the lunch and dinner menu have plenty of signature items that are in the must try category. Start with the fresh fish here. They buy fresh local fish daily from Fresh Island Fish Co. and feature a blackened seared ahi burrito that is like no other. The fresh ahi flavor is allowed to peak with the smokey blackened spices that compliment their also smokey homemade salsa, then all of it pops with the sweet chile sauce it is served with. The burrito is rolled with black beans and their spanish rice, plus cheese and cilantro.
The salmon on the menu is from the salmon farms in the Pacific Northwest. Served in a blackened BLT, the salmon salad or as an entree during the dinner hours this dish is decidedly not southwestern. The salmon is amazing in flavor and texture, served with Tupelo honey that is flown in from Florida and covered in local macadamia nuts. The crunchy buttery mac nuts and sweet sticky honey are both light enough to combine with the flaky grilled salmon and create a completely new taste sensation, there was not a crumb left on my plate, not a drip of honey left. I am definitely a new convert. As a salad spinach and other fresh veggies with papaya seed dressing compliment perfectly, and as an entree at dinner you will find mashed potato and cornbread and salad. One of the best preparations of salmon that I have discovered.
Over all their menu is great. You can’t go wrong. Some of the great dinner items I have also tried are their New York Steak and their signature seafood enchilada. The nachos are always good, they do two layers of chips and beans and meat and smother the top with lettuce and tomato. It is a fantastic pupu to pair with their margarita’s while you sit and check out Paia sights.
For kids Milagro’s had it down, their menu offers everything familiar, everything they eat. my daughter loves the plain bean and cheese burrito, I love that it is just four bucks. They also give out this awesome thing called Wikki Stix to keep your kid occupied while you are busy determining what kind of tequila to have in your margarita. They are packets of colorful wax covered string that can be sculpted into any shape your child has it in their mind to make. Its way more fun then crayons.
Speaking of tequila, the bar at Milagro’s is fully stocked with an astonishing selection of tequila. I have to admit I am not a tequila expert in any way, but I was ready to receive a tequila education here. Ultra premiums like the Gran Patron Platinum an the Asom Broso Anejo are not available for margaritas, and are served in snifter glasses for sipping. Margarita’s I am more familiar with and they have 10 different kinds, from lilikoi, traditional, mango to their signature DaKine. House tequila expert and Best of Maui’s Best Bartender Dave Bauss serves them up gourmet blended or on the rocks, and I am making a mental note to come back for a tequila tour.
Yeah this is video of me having some of the best tequila in the world.
Family Owner Al Janneck tells me for 2010 Milagro’s will be focusing on the Maui Community. Plans for the near future include charity events held in the restaurant. Al explains how Paia feels the loss of Jacques Bistro and that the way to pull through these times is by turning their attention on the community. They may have only a small corner in Paia but it is already apparent that Milagro’s is making a bigger impact island wide.
I love their tee shirt slogan: ‘Mess with the Bean Mess with whole the Burrito.’ It is a good analogy for how all things are connected, all things affect each other. Good for Milagro’s for looking at the big picture and striving high.
