JAVA JAZZ/SOUP NUTZ
My heart belongs to Java Jazz, where the atmosphere is like none other on Maui. Good music, relaxed service and-huge understatement-wild décor accompany extreme portions of yummy breakfast and lunch grub and great gourmet coffee. My favorite item is Bonnie’s Omlette, which is a mound of fluffy eggs stuffed with goat cheese, spinach, onions and peppers. The breakfast bagel sandwich is hearty and yummy, as are the barbeque pork ribs and their huge selection of savory sandwiches. The soup’s great, too. 3350 L. Honoapi‘ilani Hwy., Honokowai, 667-0787. Open M-Sa 6 a.m.-10 p.m.; Su 6 a.m.-5 p.m.
KULA SANDALWOODS CAFÉ
Great midmorning meals happen at this cozy café where, weather permitting, you can dine al fresco on the patio or stay dry under cover in the gazebo. The Lokelani is a breakfast favorite. It’s a special scrambled egg sandwich on a fresh, homemade onion bun with herb aioli, ham and Swiss cheese. Everything at this mom and pop cafe is made from scratch, including the delectable Portuguese sweetbread French toast and the grilled beefsteak sandwich with caramelized onions. 15427 Haleakala Hwy., Kula, 878-3523. Open Su-F 6:30 a.m.-2 p.m.
MALA
You can’t go wrong with a place that serves something called the “Mala Benny”—two eggs on “health bread” with Hollandaise and hash browns with your choice of proscuitto, lamb sausage or Alii mushrooms. Add the fact that Mala is right on the ocean and has one of the best views in town, and you’re really selling yourself short if don’t stop by. 1307 Front St., Lahaina, 667-9394. Served Sa-Su 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
STELLA BLUES CAFÉ
Hearty and healthy dishes make this a great spot for a long, lazy brunch. The menu ranges from Southern specialties like the smothered burrito—eggs, jalapenos, onions and cheddar wrapped in a tortilla and topped with homemade chicken chili—to the East Coast Scramble with lox and grilled onions aside a toasted bagel with cream cheese. There’s also Loco Moco and the huge pile of cinnamon sweetbread French Toast. A few breakfast items carry over to the lunch menu every day for late risers or people like me who could eat breakfast dishes all day. 1279 S. Kihei Rd., 874-3779. Open 7:30 a.m.-10 p.m.
KIHEI CAFFÉ
No-fuss dining and an extensive breakfast menu would make this a great spot to recover from a wild Saturday night if it wasn’t so crowded and noisy. But a restaurant packed with customers must be good. They serve yummy breakfast fare like the huge veggie scramble with cheddar cheese or banana macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup until two in the afternoon. Careful: the sweet cinnamon buns are totally addictive. 1945 S. Kihei Rd., 879-2230. Open 5 a.m.-8 p.m. MTW
