Jonny’s Burger Joint (Burger Salad)
Brother, is this one good. It’s basically a bun-less burger, but served in a bowl salad-style with the beef all ground up. Oh hell, I just wrote the phrase “salad-style.” Look, it’s different, I’ll give you that. It also helps that it tastes great. 2395 Honoapi’ilani Rd., Ka’anapali, 661-4500.
Hawaiian Moons Natural Foods (Salad/Hot Bar)
On any given day the salad bar at Hawaiian Moons contains more than 20 items, many of them organic, vegan and vegetarian. All are delicious. This isn’t counting the soups and chiles, or all the extras they provide like yeast, sesame seeds, dressings and the like. The salad bar features a wide variety of organic veggies and Maui grown greens, as well as stuff like tuna pasta salad, three bean salad, dolmas, egg salad and pea curry salad. The hot bar usually has tofu enchiladas, cajun tofu and cooked mixed veggies made with soy butter, as well as other healthy and tasty delights. 2411 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei, 875-4356.
MaLa (Mark’s Caesar Salad)
The ancient Romans, who spoke Latin, would not have pronounced the word “Caesar” as we do today, which is something like “seezer.” Instead, they would have pronounced it the way we say “kaisar,” which is in fact where that word came from. I actually thought of these things as I recently ate this great salad—which also comes with four crispy pita triangles. As to how the Romans said the word “pita,” historians still haven’t come up with a definite answer. 1307 Front St., Lahaina, 667-9394.
