South Maui
Pita Paradise Wailea Gateway Center, 34 Wailea Gateway Pl., Wailea, 879-7177, 7am-10pm
The popular Mediterranean joint from the Kihei triangle now has an upscale sister in Wailea. Has a bar and on the second Friday of the month there’s a bellydance show; the next one is Twisted Hips on November 12 at 6pm. Every Sunday at 5:30pm Benoit Jazzworks performs.
Kiwi Roadhouse 95 E. Lipoa St., Kihei, 874-1250
I know this New Zealand-themed eatery opened months ago, but it’s still on my list of places to check out. Scoldings on me. They boast a traditional meat pie, and the word is their burgers are good, too. They also offer live entertainment.
Bocalino 1445 South Kihei Rd., Kīhei, 874-4041
Bocalino may sound familiar; Guido Hauwaerts has reopened in the former Gian Don’s after being closed for some time. Their globe-spanning tapas menu is well worth a try, and they have great pasta. Also check out their happy hour from 4:3-6:30pm. Another bonus: Chef Sawamura doing sushi.
West Maui
Pad Thai 658 Front St., Lahaina, 661-9911, 9am-9:30pm
Another flashback, Pad Thai opened in the same spot under the same name about five years ago. And they’ve got the same great Thai takeout, plus a cute dining room and owner Jongkonnie Nishimura, who loves to cook for you.
Captain Jack’s 672 Front St., Lahaina, 667-0988
Across the street from the Pioneer Inn, a perfect location for this pirate-themed restaurant, me hardies. The fish and chips reportedly rock, and they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner in their upstairs open-air dining room. Lots of high def TV screens for Sunday football, too.
Banyan Tree Deli 626 Front St., Lahaina, 662-3354
Under Skin Deep Tattoo, this deli bakes fresh bread for the sandwiches they make, as well as handmade scones, muffins, cupcakes, cookies and an array of treats including handmade chocolates. Sandwiches are made daily using quality ingredients and non-processed meats.
Ono Kau Kau 3481 L. Honoapiilani Rd., Lahaina
Just opened in Honokowai by the ABC store, these folks are already gaining a reputation for an awesome plate lunch.
Bad Ass Coffee Company Pioneer Inn, Lahaina
Same bad ass coffee, now in the Pioneer Inn. Deja vu? Yes. They opened here years ago. But this time it’s new owners with a new take on the store.
Cafe O Lei Napili Napili Shores Resort, 442-3700
Opened in the former Maui Grill location. It’s another redo; they used to be here under the name Fish and Poi. Only open for dinner from 5-9pm, closed Sunday and Monday. BYOB.
North Shore/Upcountry
Cafe Prana Nui 810 Haiku Rd., Haiku, 463-8307, Tues.-Fri. 10am-8pm, Sat. 10am-2pm
Jason Skandunas is chef, serving organic, local, vegen macrobiotic and Ayruvedic food out of a “stationary funkadelic school bus.” How awesome, and how very Haiku.
Green Banana Frozen Yogurt 137 Hana Hwy., Paia, 808-579-9130
Green Banana Cafe sprouted a gourmet frozen yogurt shop in June. If you haven’t tried a Pro Yo Smoothie yet, do so. It’s is made with fresh, organic yogurt and is a great source of probiotics.
Central Maui
Vineyard Food Company 1951 Vineyard St., Wailuku, 243-3663
The newest addition to the Market Street lunch scene gets a stamp of approval from MauiTime staffers. Keeping it simple with wraps and sandwiches, they still have a gourmet touch. Lunch menu changes weekly; all sandwiches are $6.50 for a whole or $4.50 for halfs, or take a brown-bag special for $10 and get chips, a drink and dessert, too.
Whole Foods Market Maui Mall, Kahului
Yes, you already knew about them. But Whole Foods is now serving Sunday brunch, featuring an omelette bar, waffles that you can smother in fresh fruit and a hot bar of breakfast sides and fixin’s.
