November is a great month for foodies, not only because of the American feast we have coming up on the 25th, but also because of the amazing lineup of wine and food events this month.
On Friday, November 5, Kalama Intermediate’s 8th grade Hawaiian Immersian class is selling Chop Steak plates for $7.50 at First Friday starting at 5:30 pm. The class is raising funds for a trip to Washington D.C. in the spring.
Also this Friday, Sheraton Maui Resort and Spa is hosting its third annual Fall Festival of Wines starting at 7pm. Each guest will receive a souvenir wine glass and be entered to win prizes from around Maui. There will also be a silent auction, featuring items including two-night stays at the Sheraton Keauhou, Sheraton San Diego and Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa. Other auction items and door prizes include certificates to Tropica, Pulehu, Kobe Steakhouse, Old Lahaina Luau, Hard Rock Café, UFO Parasailing, Ruth Chris Steakhouse, Cheeseburger in Paradise, Leilani’s, Maui Jim, The Spa at Black Rock, Flatbread Pizza Company and Outback Steakhouse.
Some of the wines set to be poured include Ferrari Carans Chardonnay, Whitehaven Sauvingon Blanc, Yangara Shiraz Mclaren, Freemark Abby Viognier and Apothic Red Blend. This year Maui Brewing Company beer will also be featured as well as a select group of sakes. Libations will be augmented with tastings from the chef: a platter of salami, mortadella, prosciutto and cheese and fruit, edamame, spicy ahi poke, hummus, breads, chicken medallions, meatballs and more. Sheraton is also offering special room rates so you can make an evening of it and avoid hitting the road with a wine buzz.
The Fall Festival of Wines raises funds for the Maui Youth and Family Services, which offers emergency shelters, outreach interventions, outpatient substance abuse treatment, therapeutic foster homes, drug prevention, pregnancy prevention and many other services.
This is the third year that the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa has hosted the Fall Festival of Wines, and the second time that the event has benefited Maui Youth and Family Services. Last year they raised more than $2,000 for the cause.
On Sunday

As if that wasn’t enough: on Friday November 12, Plantation House Executive Chef Alex Stanislaw is hosting an unprecedented Landmark Vineyards wine dinner paired with bacon. I will have to clone myself to also be at the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas the same evening for their Storybook Mountain Winery dinner.
Also this month, Maui Prime launches its wine club; for $35 you get select labels of red and white wine, with recipes, tasting points and special in-store discounts. A perfect way to expand your vino knowledge. Pick up your wine in the store on the 15th of every month. Also on the 15th, Restaurant Week Hawaii launches, running through the 21st, with its first-time-ever Maui participation (restaurantweekhawaii.com). Melting Pot, Pineapple Grill Kapalua and Haliimaile General Store are just some of the participants, with funds going to the Culinary Institute of the Pacific.
Dine Out for Hospice is going to be an amazing day on the 16th, where you can choose from a great list of restaurants throughout the island. Each one will be donating a percentage of sales to Hospice Maui. Get the full list at hospicemaui.org.
Get your tickets now for the Fourth Annual Wailea Food and Wine Celebration. It’s a wine tasting extravaganza held outdoors on the lawn at Hotel Wailea on Friday November 19, with Maui’s top chefs, wine makers and vintners, fine art and live entertainment. Proceeds benefit the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center.
On Saturday November 20, Pacific’o is hosting a screening of the movie Ingredients with director Robert Bates on hand. Reception starts at 6pm with wine and martinis, plus pupu and crudo stations. Part of the proceeds will fund a new movie, Ingredients Hawaii.
Come on, you’re not full yet. The wine dinner at Merriman’s on Sunday, November 21 features a challenge between sommeliers, Jason Castle and Jason Vendrell. And the Signorello vineyards dinner on Saturday, November 27 will have Ray Signorello in attendance at David Paul’s Island Grill. With all that, you may need to take Thanksgiving off. ■
