SHARK ATTACK VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE INSPIRE SUSHI OUTING.
Defrosting chicken (again), baking biscuits (again) and doing the dishes (again… well, sort of) did not sound like a fun Sunday evening. Instead, glued to my iPhone watching YouTube: very fun.
Sucked into the abyss of endless shark attack videos, I suddenly wanted sushi. Luxuriously enough for me, there’s a new little joint just a stones throw away from my lush Ha’iku abode, and it seemed due time to give ‘er a look-see.
This establishment is off the beaten path, but only slightly. Across the street from the Ha’iku Marketplace, follow the rope lighting draped along the fence and you’ll find what looks more like a cozy house hosting a dinner party, foodie patrons filling the porch, enjoying the fare.
Speaking of fare, this joint is an anomaly of sorts (but part of a growing trend) where the menu, management and moniker morphs depending on the time of day (i.e. North Shore Cafe), but for our purposes, I’m focusing on the Sunday night sushi.
To walk into an establishment and be greeted with genuine enthusiasm, a bowl of edamame (at a clean table with a perky fresh plumeria in blue tone bud case), and David Byrne on the sound system, tickles me pink.
It’s easy to be “wicked and lazy” at this little gem tucked away off Kokomo Road. Warm yellow walls, black and white checkered floors, emerald tables, gorgeous sushi masters (I mean really, how often are the sushi chefs tall, linen-clad and ethereally glowing?), black and white flags printed with Japanese floral motifs fluttering overhead.
Rolls range from about $8 – $14, and while I recommend getting something ‘fancy’ (I opted midrange with the Ho’okipa, $10), the avocado (or cucumber) maki rolls are just $3 and a requisite addition to any order.
