Dazoo is closing in Paia. But I doubt this is the last we’ll see of the creative cocktails Master Mixologist Jimmy Shoemaker created, though as yet we don’t know where he’ll rise again. In the mean time, get to Paia on and sip your last Mr. Grey or Thyme Warp while you say your goodbyes to Dazoo’s gnocchi, bi bim bap, Maui Cattle Co. flat iron steak and nori puffs. In March, the restaurant dropped breakfast and lunch hours and moved brunch to weekends only. Right now their hours are 5-9pm daily with brunch on weekends 9am-3pm (their bakery is open 7am to noon). Now all that will be gone in a fortnight. 71 Baldwin Ave, Paia, 808-579-9999, Dazoomaui.com.
Over in Kihei, Bam’s in Azeka Makai next to the Ono Gelato has also closed. The casual Jersey style pizza and Philly cheesesteak spot has shuttered after just four months. Former owner Brandon Leonetti says he has sold it to the Maui Pie Company, which makes a variety of home-baked fruit pies, turnovers and cookies. They’ve had a regular appearance at the Maui Swap Meet on Saturdays to sell their pastries, but they might be replacing that with a brick and mortar location.
