If I could, I would spend every Sunday at 5pm with sommelier Vanessa Lampson. Her Uncorked wine tasting is far from ordinary, from the wines she chooses to her descriptions and the way she connects the dots from you to the wine and back.
The Cane & Canoe lounge in Kapalua is the perfect location to soak up wine culture. The dark wood bar, piano and comfy chairs are a mix of casual and luxurious that makes you want to kick back and enjoy.
Each Uncorked has a theme, and ours was Sham-pagne–sparkling wines in the methode de champenoise from anywhere but Champagne in France. Like Bourbon, true Champagne must originate from its namesake region. To start, we tasted a floral and complex-but-so-approachable Avinyó, Cava, Brut Reserva from Penedès, Spain, that is on her wine-by-the-glass menu for $13.
Each of the tastings is paired with elegant small bites prepared by Sous Chef Davis Hood. Last Sunday, they were smoked duck breast compressed watermelon cucumber with mint and parsley oil, whipped Surfing Goat cheese with basil caviar fired Thai basil and lavender honey and seared Hudson Valley foie gras black pepper sponge bread with Maui onion, port gastric, pickled Kula strawberry and candied walnut.
The wines are difficult to find elsewhere on the island, as the menu is a curated list cultivated by Lampson’s background studying sustainable agriculture and development at Vassar College. Pivoting on the cultural element of wine, Lampson often touches on how it serves as evidence of cultural shifts and transformations in society, highlighted by stories of her own travels to these places.
The series will guide guests through tastings from a variety of regions around the world such as Sicily, the Loire valley, the Iberian peninsula and west coast of North America. The “Uncorked” wine series is $35 per person and includes three tasting portions of wines and light appetizers. Advanced reservations required; please call 808-662-6681.
