Maui has entered into the era of local booze. We’ve never had so many spirits, wines and brews created on our soil. It seems that mixologists, barkeeps and neighborhood bar owners all have locally sourced drinks, whether they’re Maui Brewing Co. seasonal brews, Pau Vodka Mules, Maui Wines or organic Deep Island Rum. While our local spirits are on the rise, the Mainland is seeing a decline in the neighborhood bar, perhaps a victim to all the crafting and our insatiable desire for gastro-pub fare. Mixology continues to push the envelope, most recently a trend towards incorporating more unusual edibles–like ones with six legs.
In our annual bar guide, we check in with the local bar scene by listing the top 25 bars on Maui and asking the bar professionals that work there for the insider tips to sipping and supping at their fine establishments. You want to drink where the locals drink? You want to staycation like a pro? Bar crawl happy hours? This is the guide for you.
We delve deep to find out what local libations they’re pouring, where their favorite neighborhood bar is and to find out their visions of a fantasy creepy-crawly cocktail. Oh, and we didn’t forget your favorite time of day – Maui’s Happiest Hours–where we list the island’s best Happy Hours here too.
Enjoy, but as always, please drink responsibly.
If you want to skip the bartender interviews and go straight to the happy hour listings just scroll to the bottom of this post.
1. Cow Pig Bun
Cow Pig Bun is: “Burgers and Bourbon.” It’s a speakeasy style bar with a focus on whiskey and pre-Prohibition style cocktails that serves a small menu of killer burgers and sandwiches. We tend to keep the lights low, the music mellow and the food and drinks flowing. We’re located in the Kihei Tech Park across from Maui Brew Co. in a dark mirrored building that doesn’t look like it houses a restaurant. It’s an interesting location, but I think it adds to the speakeasy vibe as it can be difficult to find. We have a great local crowd as they are the ones who can find us. From 4-6pm we do happy hour with 30 percent off all food, $2 off beer and house cocktails. Those burgers are a steal and worth every penny!
Best Neighborhood Bar: I enjoy seeing my neighbors at Moose McGillycuddy’s, but I turn Maui Brew Co. into my office on many occasions. It’s quiet enough, plenty of space, the views good and they have wi-fi. Plus, it always smells like fresh bread. Gotta love the smell of beer being made.
Fantasy Bug Cocktail: I think ant salt would definitely be the way to start. I know they’re a little peppery, and mixed in with some chili or black pepper would make for a fun rim. I would love to see a combination of corn, mezcal and honey. You can even incorporate a fried worm or grub on a pick. Hey, that’s not a bad cocktail idea!
COW PIG BUN Happy Hour – 4-6pm Daily. 30 percent off food, $2 off beer and house cocktails. (353 Lipoa Pkwy., Kihei); 808-875-8100; Cowpigbun.com
For all Cow Pig Bun events visit: https://mauitime.com/venue/cow-pig-bun/
2. South Shore Tiki Lounge
South Shore Tiki Lounge is: Just a humble little joint in paradise.
Try this: Hawaiian X is super popular at Tiki’s. Raspberry vodka, X-rated liqueur, fresh pineapple juice, served with a pineapple. Can’t go wrong.
My Drink: Zombie. It’s the best bang for your buck.
Fantasy Bug Cocktail: Chocolate covered cricket and bacon martini
SOUTH SHORE TIKI LOUNGE Happy Hour – 11-6pm daily. $4 margaritas, $2 Grand Marnier float. (1913 S. Kihei Rd.); 808-874-6444; Southshoretikilounge.com
For all South Shore Tiki Lounge events visit: https://mauitime.com/venue/south-shore-tiki-lounge/
3. Milagros Food Co.
Milagros is: A local favorite, providing great food and drinks, Maui’s largest tequila selection, generous portions, lava grilled burgers and plenty of Aloha. Milagros has margaritas for every kind of drinker: strong, sweet, sour, spicy, crisp, fruity. We have the best happy hour on the Northshore.
Most Local Drink: We have the Maui Mule made with Pau Vodka fresh mint and candied ginger and the Ocean Refresher made with ocean vodka, candied ginger and fresh cucumber. Local Maui Brewing Co. beer on draft and in the can, Pau vodka, Ocean vodka and local whiskeys.
Fantasy Bug Cocktail: It’s no fantasy! A true mezcal tequila straight up, the way they’re meant to be.
MILAGRO’S FOOD CO. Happy Hour – 3-6pm daily. $4 house margaritas and house red or white wine. $3 draft Maui Brewing Co. beers and Tecate and Modelo cans. (3 Baldwin Ave, Paia); 808-579-8755; Milagrosfoodcompany.com
For all Milagros Food Co. events visit: https://mauitime.com/venue/milagros/
4. Monkeypod Kitchen
Monkeypod Bar is: A place that serves great drinks, made with the best possible ingredients, by people who genuinely care about their guests and their craft.
Most Local Drink: The No Ka Oi (named because all the ingredients are from Maui). Ocean Vodka, Thai basil, lilikoi, lime, honey and egg whites. We sell a lot of Maui Brewing Co. beers, Ocean vodka, Pau vodka and Old Lahaina rum.
Best Bar Trend: One of the things I’ve really been thinking about lately, something that never goes out of style, is hospitality. Whether it’s at a neighborhood dive or a hip gastropub, the most memorable and revered bartenders are the ones who make their guests feel important, not those who promote their own perceived celebrity. The trend I would love to see take hold is a commitment to gracious hospitality over competition and self-promotion.
Fantasy Bug Cocktail: Is that for real!? Well, I think a preserved butterfly or live praying mantis as a garnish would be fun. Campari used to be colored with insect blood until 2006 and I think some Italian liqueurs still are. Those would be fun to play with.
MONKEYPOD KITCHEN Happy Hour – 3-5:30pm and 9-11pm Daily. Half off select appetizers, $4.75 select drafts, $7 wines, $9.50 cocktails, $6 Maui Ocean Vodka, $9 pizza. (10 Wailea Gateway Pl.); 808-891-2322; Monkeypodkitchen.com
For all Monkeypod Bar events visit: https://mauitime.com/venue/monkeypod-kitchen/
GIOVANNI STEVEN CAPPELLI
Casanova is: Since 1989, it is the place to go for friends, fun, great music and dance. Before or after dinner. And it has Maui’s famous Ladies Night every Wednesday and rotating performers and shows–live or DJs–on weekend nights.
My Drink: The Crimson Martini, my favorite fruit salad: Apple Absolut vodka, Peach Absolut vodka, splash of cranberry and OJ, stirred not shaken.
Try this: Before dinner, the Campari Shakkerato: Campari and Stoli vodka, chilled and shaken. After dinner, the Sicilian Martini: Lemoncello and Orange Kettle One vodka, chilled and stirred. Or sip Prosecco with a splash of Campari, it will take you to Milano for Fashion Week and back.
Casanova Happy Hour – 5-6 Mon-Sat. $5 half carafes of wine, $5 Mojito and Margarita half carafes, $1 off beer. (1188 Makawao Ave.); 808-572-0220; Casanovamaui.com
For all Casanova events visit: https://mauitime.com/venue/casanova-italian-restaurant-and-deli/
6. Maui Brewing Co. Kahana Brewpub
Maui Brewing Co. Kahana is: Unpretentious. Our 25-plus whiskies plus the new premium rums, vodkas and tequilas on our drink list have something to complement all the beer styles on tap. If you asked our regulars what spirit to order, they would tell you to order a Pueo Pale Ale first and go from there. Dollar off all of our Maui Brews during happy hour is a solid deal but half-off our house food specialties like Maui Cattle Co. Pipikaula and the housemade bratwurst keep people occupied well past happy hour.
Most Local Drink: Our Mana Mai Tai is all about Maui. Mana, pineapple, a little orgeat and Coconut Porter. Welcome home. Beer cocktails are fresh right now and so that gives us some space to innovate. Gin, honey, lemonade and Big Swell; elderflower and our housemade root beer. We’ve narrowed down the current menu to four beer cocktails but it was a long process.
Fantasy Bug Cocktail: Starry night: Lightning bugs, Zaya, coconut water and lime from my yard and a Coconut Porter float. No garnish necessary.
MAUI BREWING CO. Happy Hour – 3-6pm Daily. $1 off house drafts, half off housemade specialities.(4405 Honoapi‘ilani Hwy., Kahana); 808-669-3474; Mauibrewingco.com
For all Maui Brewing Co. events visit: https://mauitime.com/venue/maui-brewing-company-lahaina/
7. Mala Wailea & Migrant Modern Cuisine Wailea
Mala Wailea & Migrant is: An eclectic mix of people from various place. Since we’re located in a resort, we have guests from all walks of life stopping by.
Most Local Drink: We try to support local business as much as possible. Beers from Maui Brewing Co., Big Island Brewhaus, Kona Brewing Co and Aloha Beer. Spirits like Pau vodka and Ocean vodka, Deep Island Wave rum. Also using locally made bitters from Hawaii Bitters. The restaurant’s signature drink, the Migrant Mojito, is made with muddled local mint and limes, Deep Island Wave rum made on Maui and our housemade calamansi syrup. Then it’s topped with our signature guava foam. For the adventurous cocktail drinker, try our drink with Valley Isle Kombucha’s calamansi-flavored kombucha, special made for our restaurant here on Maui.
Try this: The Beach Bonfire: mezcal with fresh lemon juice and demerara syrup on ice, then topped off with Maui Brewing Co Bikini Blonde and a li hing mui citrus rim!
MALA WAILEA & MIGRANT MODERN CUISINE Happy Hour – 4-6pm daily. Half off select food menu, half off select wine, draft beer and cocktails. (3700 Wailea Alanui Dr.); 808-879-1922; 808-875-9394; Malawailea.com

8. Three’s Bar and Grill
Three’s Bar is: A casual place to go when you want friendly staff, cutting edge cocktails, off the charts wine selection and craft beers all at amazing prices. Our selection of drink and food for happy hour are the largest on the island, considering all drinks are discounted except the specialty cocktails and about 15 different food items. You can come to Three’s 50 times for just happy hour and always try something different every time.
Most Local Drink: The Hibiscus Gimlet. We pick the hibiscus ourselves and that lends such an amazing flavor to the cocktail. All our herbs are local as well for all drinks.
Fantasy Bug Cocktail: The Young Grasshopper: a sake cocktail with a candied grasshopper.
THREE’S BAR & GRILL Happy Hour – 3-6pm and 9-10pm daily. $3.50 Mai Tais and Margaritas ($6.50 top shelf), $3.50 drafts wells and calls, $5 wines, discounted sushi and appetizers. (1945 S. Kihei Rd.); 808-879-3133; Threesbarandgrill.com
For all Three’s Bar & Grill events visit: https://mauitime.com/venue/threes-bar-and-grill/

Triston Rodrigues at the Red Bar (see Triston’s Interview at Haliimaile General Store Below) photo by Sean Hower
10. The Red Bar at Gannon’s
The Red Bar at Gannon’s is: A stunning bar with a stunning view and fun bartenders. We have Fulton Tashombe jamming out a nice mix of jazz and modern pop on Fridays from 5-7pm and he often brings some talented friends. It’s all really good food on our menu and we have a great selection of wine, local liquors, craft cocktails and beer. Our steamed clams are the biz, though, and if anything is to jump off as awesome, it’s them. I rock our Truffle Mac and Cheese about twice a week and the Burger the other two days I work. Of course, I’d be in it deep if I didn’t mention Bev’s Crab Fonduta–it’s rich, tasty and something truly unique.
Best Neighborhood Bar: I was just reading about bar closures recently. The rise of the cuisine and foody culture, I believe, has a lot to do with the decline of the dive bar. It doesn’t help that out here on Maui you can’t get a pitcher of beer, either. People more and more tend towards happy hour hangouts and generally a restaurant is going to have better eats. That being said, I think there will always be a place for the dive bar. Longhi’s, Mulligan’s and Manoli’s are the bars you can usually catch me at. I try to get to Kahale’s for my music fix and Comedy Night at Three’s is always great. Though I’d only call Kahale’s a dive, they are proud of being the best dive on Maui anyhow and Mulligan’s has that neighborhood pub feel while having some of the best live music you can get on the Southside.
Fantasy Bug Cocktail: I’m seeing a martini. Godiva dark chocolate liqueur, Chopin vodka, a dash of orange bitters and a sprinkle of chocolate-covered ants.
THE RED BAR AT GANNON’S Happy Hour – 3-8pm daily. Offers special on cocktails, well, call and a bistro menu. (100 Wailea Golf Club Dr.); 808-875-8080; Gannonsrestaurant.com
For all Red Bar at Gannon’s events visit: https://mauitime.com/venue/gannons-wailea/
11. Hali‘imaile General Store
Hali‘imaile is: Somewhere you come for a WOW experience. For happy hour, head to our sister restaurant, The Red Bar, 3pm to 8:30pm daily.

Most Local Drink: Our own lemongrass ginger frost made from fresh picked lemongrass, ginger and lime from Bev Gannon’s yard.
12. Steel Horse Saloon
The Steel Horse is: The Cheers of Maui. Happy hour is from 10am to 6pm, and we have free grinds and live music Friday and Saturday nights.

For all Steel Horse Saloon events visit: https://mauitime.com/venue/steel-horse-saloon/
Ko Bar is: The bar for fresh garden-to-glass specialties and Tiki classics served overlooking the beautiful Fairmont Kea Lani grounds.
Most Local Drink: Ko Plantation: Ko’s signature cocktail featuring Maui-made Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum, ginger, fresh pineapple, cilantro, fresh lime and pure cane sugar. Then there’s Nestor’s Calamansi Mojito: Kea Lani calamansi fruit muddled with our garden mint, simple syrup and Sammy’s Rum. Shaken and kept rustic, topped with soda water.
Neighborhood Bar: Monkeypod for great cocktails, food and, most importantly, service.
KO BAR Happy Hour – 4-6pm daily. $10 cocktails, wells and calls, $5 Maui Brewing Co. beers, $10 wines, $13 pupus, 5-8pm live music daily. (4100 Wailea Alanui Dr.); 808-875-4100; Korestaurant.com

Most Local Drink: We are the only spot on island to carry Barefoot Brew, a honey golden ale brewed exclusively for us by Maui Brewing Co.
Fantasy Bug Cocktail: Shaken Peligroso tequila, fresh squeezed orange juice, li hing mui, habaneros and a kiawe-smoked Maui centipede.
HULA GRILL KA‘ANAPALI Happy Hour – All day everyday is Aloha Hour. Special prices on cocktails and beers. (2435 Ka‘anapali Pwy.); 808-667-6636; Hulagrillkaanapali.com

16. Pailolo Bar & Grill
Pailolo is: “A lively, oceanfront sports bar that features the first food truck owned and operated by a Maui hotel. Our Happy Hour offers draft beer, house chardonnay and house cabernet, our classic Mai Tai and our drink of the day at good prices. It also offers our side dishes at great savings. Depending upon the time of year, you can also watch the sunset without leaving your bar stool, which really adds to the happy hour experience.
Most Local Drink: Earlier this year, we hosted the first ever Rum Scrum Cocktail Contest in partnership with Maui’s Deep Island Hawaiian rum. The winning cocktail, Maika‘i by Gabe Harvey of Kihei, is featured on our menu. It has Deep Island Hawaiian rum, passion fruit puree, coconut water, orgeat and lime juice.
Fantasy Bug Cocktail: Take a scorpion and marinate it in some Hawaiian Chili pepper water, then serve in a spicy lilikoi margarita.
PAILOLO BAR & GRILL Happy Hour- 4-6pm Daily. $5 Mai Tais, $5-7 draft beer, $6 drinks of the day, $4 side dishes. (6 Kai Ala Dr., Ka‘anapali); 808-667-3200
For all Pailolo Bar & Grill events visit: https://mauitime.com/venue/pailolo-bar-grill/
17. Cane & Canoe Bar

When you come visit me at Cane & Canoe Bar, make sure you ask what we are featuring.
Most Local Drink: Our Rose Garden. It features Ulupalakua Vineyards Rose, Maui-sourced lemon and mint and rosemary grown in our own garden on the grounds of Montage Kapalua Bay. It’s important for us to support great tasting local products. From Maui, we feature Maui Brewing Co., Pau vodka and cognac, Ocean vodka, Deep Island rum and wines from Ulupalakua Vineyards. From Kauai, we feature Koala rums and Nani Moon Meadery. From the Big Island, we feature Mehana Brewing Co..

For all Cane & Canoe events visit: https://mauitime.com/venue/cane-and-canoe-bar-montage-kapalua/
18. Stopwatch Sportsbar & Grill
Stopwatch is: A local country bar where you can get ice-cold beer with a shot of whiskey on the side, some good hot food and everybody knows your name. Our happy hour is pretty plain and simple. We’re serving up a lot of dollar-off 12-oz beers, domestic bottles, wines and wells from 3:30-6:30pm, usually accompanied by a game of some sort or an awesome playlist, depending on the season.
Most Local Drink: Our regulars are mostly beer drinkers with shots on the side, but we get to make a Mai Tai here and there. We don’t make an in-house mix, so we all get creative with our own recipes. Whether it’s mango, lychee or the original, it works every time.
Fantasy Bug Cocktail: As a bug hater myself, I feel as though there’s no fantasy here to dream up. However, it might be fun to have a Sugar Cane Spider Martini. Starting with a sugared rim, your vodka of choice, fresh squeezed lemon, splash of pineapple, shaken, strained and topped with a caramelized cane spider. Creepy.

The intent is to fabricate thought-provoking, artisan libations in an environment suitable to enjoy them best. Our focus is to preserve the classic measures of yesteryears while tastefully incorporating the flavors of Hawaii.
Best Neighborhood Bar: Nacho’s Grande in Honokowai. After all of our events, it’s a race to get there for a couple of cold beers and shots of tequila for my staff. Neighborhood bars are a great place to just be yourself. More and more people are waking up to the idea of a well-crafted cocktail, but the endeavor can be a little intimidating for most. I believe locals still identify more with simplicity and comfort. Jack and Cokes, slippers, late night pizza slices and letting loose ’til the wee hours is still the standard on the Valley Isle.
