Okole Wow is a new cocktail just released into the wild at Tropica. The drink features Okolehao from Haleakala Distillery, a liqueur that gets its roots from old hawaiian moonshine made with ti plant. The guys over at Tropica, Alex Dreher and Freddie Sconfienza, have been stirring up trouble with Okolehao and have developed the perfect concoction for this 80 proof liqueur.
They have paired it with wild hibiscus flowers, and the syrup of wild hibiscus. It reminds me of the Hibiscus Coolers that you can get at the healthfood store. It is mildly sweet, with a mellow astringent. The Okolehao’s butterscotch flavors underlie the drink, and the finish is refreshing. The cocktail is served in a rocks glass. The drink comes to you a deep beet red from the hibiscus syrup, garnished with a lime wedge and a hibiscus flower. Two of these and your West side happy hour sunset is primed, but don’t stop with the cocktails because the pupus here are divine as well.
Okole Wow Recipe
-1 1/4 OZ of Okolehao Liqueur
-1 Chunk of Muddled Maui Gold Pineapple
-3/4 OZ of Hibiscus Syrup
-1 fresh squeezed lime
-after muddling pineapple with Okolehao, shake all ingredients together
-pour into rocks glass with ice
-top with soda
-garnish with lime & hibiscus flower
