BRIGIT & BERNARD’S GARDEN CAFÉ
Okay, so they’re your some’n-some’n on the side. That doesn’t mean they need to suffer fast food along with the quickie in the parking lot. Show them you actually care by taking them to eat good, meaty, hearty, rich German food. Trust us, Brigit & Bernard’s Weiner Schnitzel is even better than yours. 335 Ho‘ohano St., Kahului, 877-6000. Open M-F 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m.; W-Sa 5-9 p.m. $$
JB’S KITCHEN
Great local food that’s away from the hustle-bustle and therefore less likely to be the location of an incriminating sighting by friends and family. The kalbi is excellent as is the meat jun. Hell, JB’s is so tucked away you may even have time for both. 1546 Mill St., Wailuku, 244-9616. Open M-F 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5-8 p.m.; Sa 10 a.m.-2 p.m. $
CAFÉ DEL SOL
It’s easy to start feeling used and cheap while living the life as a side salad. For a self-esteem boost head Upcountry for some strong espresso, homemade blueberry muffins and classic eggs benedict that will make you feel like a million bucks. 3620 Baldwin Ave., Makawao, 572-4877. Open M-Sa 8 a.m.-3 p.m. $
PAUWELA CAFÉ AND BAKERY
It’s easy to go incognito in Haiku with its abundance of little B&B’s and tropical jungles to play a little patty-cake in. The morning after, eat breakfast at Pauwela Café. They’ve got a great selection of coffee beverages, breakfast burritos and baked goods. In addition, their house potatoes are divine. Plus they open early in case you need to be home before nine a.m. 375 W. Kuiaha Rd., Haiku, 575-9242. Open daily 6 a.m.-2 p.m. $
MAUI SWISS CAFÉ
Sure, it’s on Front Street in Lahaina, but that’s only a dangerous place if your Main Course lives on the Westside. If he or she lives Upcountry or works in town, than this place is golden. Speaking of golden, try their crepes. If you’re not feeling crepes go for any of their huge, satisfying sandwiches or salads. They have ice cream, too, because even cheaters like dessert. 640 Front St., Lahaina, 661-6776. Open daily 9 a.m.-6 p.m. $ MTW
