Domestic violence is a painfully prevalent issue in our community, as we are reminded by the posters up around town displaying slogans like “So when I didn’t know how she felt… I asked.” These posters are meant to ingrain the basics of what being in a respectful relationship means in the heads and hearts of both men and women, but the plain truth is that because domestic violence is such a personal issue, it’s common to keep the door shut, curtains drawn, and pretend it doesn’t exist. Be brave enough to reject this attitude and join in Maui’s 5K and 10K Fun Run for domestic violence: “Run Because You Want To: For Women Who Run Because they HAVE To.” The Fun Run will benefit Women Helping Women, an organization that provides a 24 hour emergency help line, an emergency safe house and shelter, as well as other services that help women to escape unhealthy, abusive situations. The Run will start and end at The Green Banana Cafe in Paia, traveling past Paia Bay and Baldwin Beach Parks for the 5 K and streching out down old Sable Road for the 10K. After the race, the Green Banana cafe will provide goodies to the participants, and there should be no need to fear the heat during the race itself, as there will be both a water station and first aid personel on hand. Pre-register at the Green Banana cafe (10K – $25 Adults, $20 under 18, 5K – $20 Adults, $15 under 18) or on race day for an extra $10 for late registration. Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers. Registration starts at 6am at the Green Banana Cafe, and the race begins at 8am. By: Sierra Brown
