E-Racing Domestic Violence
Saturday (March 13), 6am registration, 8am race at Green Banana Cafe, 137 Hana Hwy., Paia
Domestic violence is painfully prevalent in our community, as we are reminded by the posters around town displaying slogans like, “So when I didn’t know how she felt…I asked.” The intent is to ingrain the basics of what being in a respectful relationship means in the heads and hearts of both men and women, but the plain truth is that because domestic violence is such a personal issue, it’s common to keep the door shut, curtains drawn and pretend it doesn’t exist. Be brave enough to reject this attitude and join in Maui’s 5K and 10K fun run for domestic violence, Run Because You Want To: For Women Who Run Because they HAVE To. All proceeds benefit Women Helping Women, an organization that provides a 24-hour emergency help line, an emergency safe house and shelter and other services. The run will start and end at the Green Banana Cafe in Paia, traveling past Paia Bay and Baldwin Beach Parks for the 5K and stretching down old Stable Road for the 10K. After the race, Green Banana will provide goodies to the participants, and there should be no need to fear the heat during the race itself, as there will be both a water station and first-aid personnel on hand. Pre-register at Green Banana (10K is $25 adults, $20 under 18; 5K is $20 adults, $15 under 18). (You can also register on race day for an extra $10.) Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers. Registration starts at 6am at the Green Banana Cafe, and the race begins at 8am.
