THE BOOM BOOM BOOM
Thursday (December 31), Charley’s, $75, 10 pm – 1:30 am, 579-9453.
This will be Willie Nelson’s 77th New Year—and he’s lookin’ to spend it with you. And where else on Maui but at his favorite North Shore hub (of which he is part-owner), Charley’s? We all know about Charley’s and we certainly all know about Willie, so let’s instead learn a little more about—and perhaps gain from it a little resolution inspiration—Willie’s activism:
Partnering with the Animal Welfare Institute, he’s campaigned in support of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 311). In a letter to congress (view it at myspace.com/willienelson), he writes, “horses should not be killed at one of the three foreign-owned slaughterhouses in the United States so diners abroad can feast on their flesh.” Whoa. Word.
Speaking of which (sort of), before you start and after you break your fit-and-trim resolve, indulge in Ben & Jerry’s “Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler Ice Cream,” proceeds benefiting Farm Aid. It’s a flavor I found out about from The Colbert Report, as “The Word” man himself boasts his own charity benefiting cold stuff called “AmeriCone Dream.”
What’s dreamy and goes well will with aforementioned cold and creamy? Pakalolo. Willie co-chairs the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), which in September wrapped it’s 38th annual convention held in San Francisco; theme: “Yes We Can-nabis.”
