EXTRA SHAT
Did you know that FREE with every online purchase from www.williamshatner.com, you get an expired phone card featuring the original cast of Star Trek, sealed in plastic? Or, that these cards can be found on eBay for $9.99 – $29.99? To score this illustrious freebie from the The Shatner Store, one can indulge in everything from retro Star Trek figurines (all at discounted prices), to a rare Master Replicas factory-sealed, limited edition Communicator, to signed Boston Legal and original Star Trek props, to the 2-disc DVD set of the television mini-series “Invasion Iowa” (2005)—starring guess who—or even personal photos of the Shatner ‘ohana.
So here’s what I’m thinking:
You’re like me–a Trekkie (or perhaps you just adore those Priceline.com commercials) strapped for cash, but you just GOTTA attend Mr. Shatner’s appearance on December 18th at the Hard Rock Cafe. Solution so as to make it so? Buy yourself an early Christmas present from the pile of everything Shat treats, as teased above, then swap out the freebie phone card on eBay for some (supposed) dough dropped back into your PayPal account! Then, use the ‘refund’ and whittle down your expenses for the tickets to meet ‘n greet with William Shatner (uh, let me repeat: WILLIAM SHATNER!), live on the West Side (see my original “Breaking” / “Big Shows” post re: Bill’s appearance HERE … with a little ‘freebie’ of my own at the end: links to “Rocket Man” by the man himself AND Stewie Griffin).
Because, unless you’re a hardcore collector, that thing is really worth about as much as the other expired (er… cancelled) plastic cards in my wallet.
Eek! Bill looks a little perturbed, no?
Alright, alright… Don’t really trade in your super cool freebie phone card just to help out with the ticket cost ($40 – $75, avail through The Hard Rock Cafe, or through groovetickets.com). Just get yourself into warp drive and head to da West Side… That’s were I’ll be! After all, what slight post-pokes I make here are only in efforts to mask my extreme dorkdom over all things Star Trek and all things Shat.
THE FINAL FRONTIER
Ooh! Why not make your Thursday night thematic?! If you’ve got the guts and the gas, prior to, head up to Haleakala for the very last kilo hoku (stargazing) session at the the Haleakala National Park’s Summit Visitor Center. Guides will tell stories of the winter skies from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Snuggle with your sweetie and share some sipable hot goodness (steer clear of the more, um, ‘fun’ additions that could be slipped into your coffee or cocoa and settle for just caffeine enough to get you safely down the 9,400 ft. elevation, and then far out West).
Why go? Not only is it the last stargazing session of 2009, or that we’ve been blessed by some pretty spectacular celestial displays of late (check out the Geminids meteor shower December 13/14th), but by this time next year–as reported by The Maui News on December 9th–construction for the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope will be well underway; the official selection of Haleakala as the site for this new telescope having been made public by the National Science Foundation on December 8th in the Federal Register.
