Not sure if you’ve been clicking through the indigenous outrage blogs lately, but a bunch of people are pissed at Urban Outfitters. Mostly, the Navajo Nation argues it’s a big no-no that the hipster clothier’s culturally misappropriated the name “Navajo” on products like panties and fabric-wrapped hip flasks.
Just ahead of St. Patty’s Day, the Irish community’s ire’s been raised, too; as many are unhappy with Urban’s seasonal shirt line that say stuff like, “Kiss me. I’m drunk or Irish or whatever.” (Note: almost all of the off-color products have been pulled from Urban Outfitters website and stores.)
So in efforts to be culturally sensitive this St. Patty’s season, I’m nixing the section on where to go for day-after Irish yoga (think child’s pose/downward dog with puke). But against my better judgment (hey, I’m a few beers deep already), I’m sticking with recycling my annual line for our St. Patty’s Picks: “Here’s a rundown of hot haps on everyone’s favorite religious-turned-secular celebration.” Because we’d like to believe that all St. Patrick himself would’ve really cared about is that you’re happy and safe on his namesake holiday. Cheers!
MULLIGAN’S ON THE BLUE’S “SHARING THE GREEN” GOLF TOURNAMENT + EXTREME BOCCE BALL + ST. PATTY’S PARTY – This 7am shotgun-start, four-person scramble–plus their 9am Extreme Bocce Ball Tourney–is the perfect preamble to a day spent with the Mulligan’s on the Blue crew. (If anyone throws a proper St. Patty’s party, it’s the authentic Irishmen of Mulligan’s. Who else, after all, has a year-round countdown clock to this big day?) The tourneys benefit two local charities–Hospice Maui and Back Pack Buddies (a keiki nutrition program)–and cost just $125 for golf or $40 for bocce and includes lunch. Speaking of food, Mulligan’s doors open at 8am and there’s no cover until 4pm ($20 advance general admission / $25 door), and they’ve got great Irish grinds at their lunch buffet (10:30am-2:30pm; $25 per person), foot tent (3-9pm; $15 per plate) and dinner buffet (4-7:30pm; $50 per person all-inclusive). Keeping it lively is the day-long lineup of entertainment, including Celtic Hart (12-2pm), The Celtic Tigers (3:30-5:30pm and 6:30-8pm), Isle of Maui Pipe Band featuring Jack Lee (5:30-6:30pm), and The Freeradicals Projekt (8-10pm). And everyone knows the only place to get a properly poured Guinness is at this Irish hub, and this drink of choice is on special for just $5. 8am-5pm.
