Afrika Bambaataa is an important rap-music pioneer who, much like Grandmaster Flash, became a forgotten elder statesman as rap evolved. Bambaataa, who took his name (which means “affectionate leader”) from a movie about Zulu warriors, quit the Black Spades street gang in the mid-1970s and formed Zulu Nation, a music-oriented “youth organization.” Among the members who became minor rap luminaries were DJs Red Alert, Jazzy Jay, and Whiz Kid, as well as Afrika Islam, who went on to work with Ice-T. FIRST MAJOR KENDAMA TOURNAMENT – Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center will host Maui’s first major kendama tournament. The event is organized by Dane and Kerry Han, owners of the store Kaleidoscope, which sells a wide variety of the traditional Japanese toy. The tournament is open to ages seven and older as contestants compete in different age divisions in an elimination competition to determine the top 2014 Kendama Tournament Players. 2014 MAUI OPEN STUDIOS UPCOUNTRY EVENT – Sat-Sun. The Annual Maui Open Studios Event is the first of its kind in the state of Hawaii and was created almost four years ago by a former Maui artist who now resides in the San Francisco Bay Area.
