Coast Excellent: Saturday (October 16), Kihei and Sunday (October 17), Central Maui, 10am-2pm
Stemming from the success of six years of Lahaina Town Cleanups, the Community Work Day program and its partnering organizations expand to islandwide cleanups. What better opportunity to put your town pride to action? This weekend kicks off in Kihei (October 16; meets at Kalama Park to clean the La’ie Wetlands, or at the Maui Canoe Club hale for cleanup along North Kihei and Kealia Pond) followed by a grand Central Maui cleanup (October 17; meets at the Hawaiian Canoe Club hale at Hoaloha Park fronting the Kahului Harbor, with cleanup efforts focused there through Waiehu), both from 10am-2pm. [Plus, save the date for the North Shore cleanup on (October 23, up Baldwin and to Ho’okipa); and the Hana Town cleanup, October 24, (Waianapanapa to Hana Bay).] At the last Lahaina Town Cleanup, tangible results were seen not only in the tons of garbage removed from our West side coastal landscape, but two sea creatures—a lobster and an eel, ensnared in debris and facing imminent death— were rescued by divers foraging for underwater garbage. Instead of distributing single-use plastic water bottles, participants are encouraged to bring reusable drink receptacles. Cleanup supplies are happily supplied by event coordinators, including rubber gloves and biodegradable garbage bags; but you can help reduce impact by bringing reusable gloves and bags/buckets/wheelbarrows. However, beware of the Bag Monster (seriously… scroll down and watch the video) who will be lurking around every corner like the landfill embodied, ready to weird you out and thwart your admirable accomplishments. 877-2524, info@cwdhawaii.org
